A. Overview

The Sebelas Maret (eleven March) University of Surakarta, usually known as UNS Solo or UNS, has been in existence for over three decades since its foundation on 11 March 1976. Its establishment was aimed to encourage quality betterment of higher education in Surakarta. UNS has always been developing to achieve that aims and bent on becoming a world-class university in the future.

UNS has now gone through a long distance in the course of time and years of experiences brought along advancements in many aspects. The first development period of UNS was its first five years, when they started to build an independent campus by 1980. The strewn classrooms were integrated in a building upon a 60 acres land in Kentiigan, at the bank of Bengawan Solo. The first period of construction took five years.

Improvement of non-physical resources then became the focus as the physical development was done. It was all started after a new rector was elected, Prof. Dr. Koento Wibisono in 1986. Five years under the leadership of Prof. Koento, UNS progressed significantly. It was apparent if we see the development in the sectors of academic, the number of staff, and infrastructure.

This trend did not wear off even though Prof. Koento was no longer in charge. Now, UNS has become a very developed university despite its young age. Achievements like the nationally acknowledge skin surgeons from the Faculty of Medical Science, the invention of starbio and salt-resistant rice by the Faculty of Agriculture, and some others are proofs that UNS is already on the right path to further advancement.
