Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa University (UST) is one of private universities in Yogyakarta City which was established in 1955. This university was founded by Father of National Education, Ki Hajar Dewantara. He established not only this university, but also some other institutions, such as Taman Indria (Kindergarten), Taman Muda (Elementary School), Taman Dewasa (Junior High School), Taman Guru (Teacher Educational School), Taman Karya (Vocational School), and Taman Madya (Senior High School). These institutions were under Perguruan Tamansiswa Foundation which was established on July 3rd, 1922.
Since its establishment in 1955, this university has changed its name several times. At the beginning of its establishment, UST is a B 1 course institution which was then changed into Taman Prasarjana with three departments, namely Language Department (Javanese and Indonesian), Social Departments (Geography and History), and Natural Science Departments (Natural Science). The next change happened in 1959 when it turned into Taman Sarjana. Along with this change, a faculty was established as the result of departments fusion, namely Taman Sarjana Sastra dan Filsafat (Literature and Philosophy).
On the 41st birthday of Perguruan Tamansiswa Foundation, July 3rd 1963, UST changed its name into Taman Sarjana dan Ilmu Pendidikan. There were additional departments, namely Educational Science, Natural Science, History Science, Geography Science, Indonesian Language, Javanese Language, and English Language Departments.
The other change happened on October 1st 1964. It changed its name into Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa. Since then, Nyi Hajar Dewantara was appointed to be the head of four departments, i.e. Educational Sciences, Geography, Law and Economics, and Literature and Culture (including Indonesian Language, English Language, and History).
In 1980, Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa opened new programs, namely Educational Diploma Program of Indonesian Language and Literature Education. During its development, the program expanded to include English Language, Mathematics, Accounting, and Pancasila Moral Education.
In 1983, Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa changed the institution into a university. Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa became a university with several faculties complete with the departments, such as Pedagogy and Educational Sciences, Economics Faculty, Agriculture Faculty, Psychology Faculty, and Engineering Faculty.
UST vision and mission are to be national university superior in global level in areas of sciences, technology, and culture. The vision and mission are represented in various programs, such as providing high education which prepares students to be member of society competent in their areas, creative, innovative, collaborative, independent, of good morale, sensible, having nationality insight, as well as competitive in national and global level.
These vision and mission fit the purpose of this institution establishment, that is achieving reputation as the best national university in Indonesia which produces high quality, collaborative, independent, and competitive graduates who are able to compete in global market as well as quality versatile research and community service. In realizing this vision and mision, UST is obedient to the legacy, such as piety, honesty and sincerity, mutual trust and appreciation, integrity, commitmen, and responsibility. The motto of UST is “Kawah Candra Dimuka Kader Bangsa yang Berjiwa Kebangsaan” which more or less means mental training for the nation’s young generations with spirit of nationality”.
The special characteristic of UST which has nationality spirit is reflected in the figure of its founder, namely Ki Hajar Dewantara. Since the establishment of Perguruan Tamansiswa, Ki Hadjar had taught his students not to be dependent to the authority and struggle to be independent. This notion strengthened Ki Hajar Dewantara principle of rejecting educational aid from Dutch-Indies during the colonial period. This tenet has been taught to every students of Tamansiswa until present time.
Based on this tenet about independence, UST emphasizes self-reliant attitude. Every graduates of UST is expected to be competitive with any knowledge obtained from teaching-learning process in this university. In addition, every students of UST is expected to be independent for collective interest. This attitude was also of Ki Hadjar Dewantara who took educational area as a form of struggle for national development.
Along with this independence spirit, UST also teaches leadership spirit in education reflected in the continuing production of teaching professionals. This fact is coherent with the paradigm of UST as a university managed in an educational institution frame focusing on providing quality teachers or educational practitioners. This attitude fits well with recent condition of Indonesia which is lack of educational practitioners, while there are many children across thousands of islands in Indonesia. This condition enables the graduates of UST to be educational practitioners devoting their teaching in all remote areas of Indonesia in order to produce generation with the spirit of nationality.
The location of UST campus is convenient because it is near Yogyakarta downtown. UST has three separate campus locations, i.e.:
